It is no accident that the focus of interest of applied anthropology has shifted with the withdrawal of colonial rule. Another way cultures change is through diffusion. It is the element of pressure that differentiates acculturation from diffusion. To the Jie, cattle are the source of all happiness, providing security and order in an uncertain and often hostile environment, hence the age-old blessing, "May you always live with herds."
