My training is in philosophy and I use a conceptual and analytic approach to teach math. Moreover Timss study (1996) showed that USA students in all three levels of K-12 mathematics study are under average. I was one of those students when it came to math. When tutoring math, it is crucial that the child learn the vocabulary associated with the methods, as this can provide understanding of the problems that are being asked. My son had incredible difficulty learning his times tables until we created a picture story for each pair he was struggling with. Lectures can be used to present information that would be difficult for the student to get in other ways, particularly if the students do not have the time required for research, or if they do not have access to reference material.
