Conclusions The new process has advantages over the various approaches that have been used to date. The ceramic base allows for streamlined processing with improved performance. No significant changes are necessary in the process lines now existing that produce enameled aluminum cookware with PTFE coatings. Two-coat/one-fire application of the interior ceramic coat may be done before or after application of the exterior coating and processed once through the enameling furnace. The subsequent application and curing of the PTFE may be done as usual with no changes in the application amount or curing temperature and time.

Although the pump has two speeds, it is run only on low speed (50 gal/min) so as not to shear the enamel. The existing drain tray system from the old dip process was reused (Fig. 12). Pottery glazes occasionally exhibit the defect of crazing because the glaze has been put in tension by greater expansion of the ceramic body. Therefore, to develop optimum strength, the thermal expansion of an enamel frit must be developed to be in compression. The degree of compression depends on the part. The compression of enamel coatings applied to washers and stovetops must not be excessive or warping will occur, making assembly difficult and enamel chippage a possibility. Parts subjected to thermal cycling require coatings with a thermal expansion developed to meet the conditions.
