Diese schnelle Entwicklung wurde dadurch möglich, daß Japan ausländi­ sches Erziehungswesen und ausländische Wissenschaft und Technik mit gro­ ßem Geschick und Eifer nachahmte. Es kann aber keinem Zweifel unterlie­ gen, daß die schöpferischen Kräfte in unserem Lande dabei vielfach zu kurz kamen, und es wird verständlich, daß sich damit folgende Eigentümlichkeiten oder Schwächen der japanischen Wissenschaft und Technik ausbilden konnten: a) Nach der Meiji-Restauration wurde unter dem starken Schutz des Staates eifrig ausländische Technik auf japanischen Boden verpflanzt. Die japanische Technik ist daher heute noch in hohem Maße nach ausländischen Verfahren ausgerichtet und auf die Einfuhr ausländischer Maschinen ange­ WIesen. b) Die übermäßige Unterstützung der technischen Entwicklung durch den Staat hatte zur Folge, daß sich die japanische Wissenschaft vollständig von der Praxis zurückzog, sich nur noch für Gebiete der reinen Wissenschaft begeisterte und dadurch an schöpferischer Kraft verlor.
