HID lamps take many forms. Compact short-arc lamps are only a few inches in size but emit high-intensity, high-lumen output radiation with a variety of spectral characteristics. In long-arc lamps, such as fluorescent, low-pressure sodium vapor, and xenon, their output spectral characteristics are determined by the gas in the arc or the tube-wall emitting material. The fluorescent lamp has a particular phosphor coating on the inside of the glass and bulb, which determines its spectral output. Power outputs available from arc-discharge lamps range from a few watts up to many tens of kilowatts.

3 Low-Light-Level Intensified Camera When a security application requires viewing during nighttime conditions where available light is moonlight, starlight, or other residual reflected light, LLL intensified cameras are necessary. The ICCD, SIT, and ISIT cameras have sensitivities between 100 and 1000 times more than the best solid-state or tube cameras. Camera costs are between 10 and 20 times more than CCD cameras. Chapter 15 describes the characteristics of these cameras. 2 Solid-State Camera CCD solid-state cameras are available in three different image formats: 2 /s-inch, Vs-inch, and Vs-inch.

Figure 2-19 shows how these are connected into the CCTV security system. The manual switcher connects one camera at a time to the monitor or other recording or printing device. The Microprocessor-Controlled When the security system requires many cameras with pan/tilt camera mountings, in various locations, and with multiple monitors and other alarm input functions, a microprocessor-controlled switcher and keyboard can be used to manage these additional requirements (Figure 2-20). In large security systems, the switcher is microprocessor controlled and can switch hundreds of cameras to dozens of monitors, recorders, or video printers via an RS-232 communications control link.
