A few months later, Darwin’s first book was published. It was his account of the Beagle voyage, issued as part of a three-volume set that also included books by FitzRoy and another Beagle officer. Darwin waited nervously to see how it would be received. He need not have worried. His book was hailed as the best written and most interesting of the three. Lyell and other scientists applauded it, and Darwin’s hero, Alexander von Humboldt, said that it was one of the best travel books ever published.
