Asking a question or performing an inquiry is a mode of human behavior and as such illustrates what ontological inquiry is about. We already know what asking a question involves, because we have already asked, and answered, many questions. Involved in any question, outside the activity of the questioner himself, there is something that is questioned (ein Befragtes), something that is asked about (das Gefragte), and something that is learned by the asking (das Erfragte). Corresponding to each of these structural moments of a question, we have in ontological questioning an entity, its being, and the meaning of its being.
And whoever says Dasein gives tone to Sein. The literary creation, on the other hand, gives tone to the world of the artist's expression; it brings to speech the tensions felt in the artist's being in the world. Under this guise, the Heideggerian aestheticalways to be differentiated, as he said, from the art of the pastrycookis perfectly consistent with a structuralist criticism. But the linguistic theory upon which that criticism was built, Saussure's General Theory of Linguistics, 23 considered all uses of language to be structured relations of signs, themselves merely relational counters between a signifier and a signified.
Unfortunately, there is no alternative to a purely philosophical analysis of the concepts involved.
