Marx and Engels were a part of its Brussels branch. We must make a few comments on the title and other language of the Manifesto. First, as Engels notes in the 1888 Preface to an English edition included here, the label “communist” was only adopted because the word “socialist” was already taken. At the time the Manifesto was composed, “socialists” especially referred to various promoters of utopian schemes, ideal communities that would come about through moral and intellectual persuasion. The specific label chosen by Marx and Engels was therefore governed by the need to distinguish their own approach from alternative perspectives in their day.

We must be precise: Marx says the rate of profit tends to decline. However, the “absolute mass” of surplus-value can nonetheless increase. The rate of profit declines because the surplus appropriated from labor is an ever-smaller fraction of the total value, that is including machines, mobilized in creating a product. ”104 Given this, Harvey argues that “[s]urplus absorption is, then, the central problem. ”105 Foster and Magdoff (and Foster and McChesney, included below) argue similarly that the surplus incessantly produced by capitalism cannot find productive outlets, leading to overaccumulation and stagnation in the “real” economy.

Today the word “socialist” would serve as well to describe their position, indeed perhaps better because of the twentieth-century experience with so-called communist governments.
