On the morning of April 20, 1914, gunfire broke out between striking miners and a battalion of the Colorado National Guard at the Ludlow tent colony, where the miners and their families were living after having been kicked out of company-owned houses the previous year. Women and children fled in terror from the scene even before the Guard set fire to the tents. Eleven children and two women who were unable to escape died in a pit under one of the tents, where they had gone to avoid being in the line of fire.
