The entertainer's career changed course in 1934, when he succeeded Henry Hull as Jeeter Lester in Tobacco Road and played the part for 1,899 performances from 1934 to 1939. An even greater success was the role of the reformed alcoholic Theodore Hickman in Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, in which Barton opened at the Martin Beck Theatre on October 9, 1946. His final stage triumph was as Bert Rumson in Paint Your Wagon, which opened in November 1951. James Barton also enjoyed a spasmodic film career, involving roles in seventeen feature films between 1923 and 1961, of which the most important are Lifeboat (1944), The Time of Your Life (1948), and The Misfits (1961).

A year later, Baker and Leslie were married, they divorced in 1918. Belle Baker made her major vaudeville debut at Hammerstein's Victoria Theatre in 1911 and was soundly criticized for the quality of her songs, her dress, and her material. One critic, C. F. Zittell, was particularly scathing, but a few weeks later he telephoned Baker and offered to help her improve the act. " Within two years, Belle Baker was a vaudeville headliner. " Explaining her choice of song material, Baker wrote in Variety (December 26, 1919): If I think a number has possibilities, I try it.

B BELLE BAKER (New York, December 25, 1893—Los Angeles, April 28, 1957) Belle Baker was one of vaudeville's great singing stars, remembered for the manner in which she would put over a song with a sob in her voice, but to describe her merely as a masterful torch singer is tantamount to labeling Fanny Brice a singer of comedy numbers. Baker was equally adept at handling both the comic and the melancholic, and as proof of this one need look no further than three songs she introduced, all written by Irving Berlin, the composer with whom she was most associated.
