The developers of Ruidoso Downs, one of them told me in all seriousness, decided to promote quarter horses because no other race track anywhere offered a world championship for that breed. The venture succeeded so well that the Downs is now con- Page 16 ducting world-champion sweepstakes for mules. Mules are indeed worthy, long-suffering, neglected animals. But what one wonders is this: Does the sound of ''world champion" so appeal to Texans that they have made a small town in a far-off mountain range a howling financial and social success on no other basis?
So, too, did the animals, an extinction hastened by the Paleo-Indians as they desperately hunted down the last herds that were struggling to survive in a dwindling number of favored spots. Did the predators vanish with their victims? Or did they adapt to environmental change? No one knows. In any event, the Southwest remained populated, either by descendants of the early hunters or by a new influx of people from the outsideor both. Whoever they were, these arid-land dwellers were able to exist on a varied dietmountain sheep and deer if hunting went well, but mostly seeds, berries, nuts, roots, insects, reptiles, and such small game as rabbits, squirrels, and rodents, which could be killed with a throwing stick or trapped in primitive snares.
Because of the regularity with which currents of hot air slide up certain mountainsides, those spots draw the noisiest barrages. Santa Fe is said to attract more wild lightning storms than any region outside the Gulf Coast. And although each area drenched by a summer downpour is small, the weather conditions that produce the precipitation are widespread, so that several storms may be banging away simultaneously. One of the Southwest's magnificent sights is a sky of deep blue pools gleaming among gray-bottomed clouds that seem to rest on solid columns of rainor, at times, of hail.
